You have until midnight tonight to have your taxes postmarked or e-filed.
The Akron post office at 675 Wolf Ledges Parkway will remain open until 7 p.m. and the Cleveland post office at 2400 Orange Ave., until 10 p.m. The U.S. Postal Service suggests that if you are dropping off your tax return in a street collection box, make sure you check the last pickup time of the day and that you have sufficient postage, as tax agencies will not pay any postage that is due.
If you need extra time for your federal taxes, you can get an automatic six-month extension by filling out a Form 4868. The extension must still be postmarked by today. An extension gives you extra time to get your paperwork in, but does not extend the time you have to pay what you owe. You will still owe interest on any amount not paid by today, plus possible penalties.
The Internal Revenue Service suggests that you file on time, even if you can’t pay. File and pay as much as you can, then apply online for a payment plan or call 800-829-1040 to discuss your options. The IRS website is www.irs.gov
