Caller scams grocer of almost $500

By Beacon Journal staff

CUYAHOGA FALLS: The owner of a Bailey Road grocery store was scammed out of nearly $500 between Aug. 10 and Wednesday.

The man reported Thursday he received a phone call from a caller who said he was with the electric company. The caller threatened to turn off the man's electric service if he did not wire $495.

Thinking the call was legitimate, the store owner wired the money, he told police. He later learned the money was not placed on his utility account.

The city has its own electric utility and never asks customers to wire money, Cuyahoga Falls police said.
