Corbin Foundation awards grants totaling $381,500 to Akron-area organizations

The Mary S. and David C. Corbin Foundation recently awarded $381,500 in new and continuing grants and gifts to charities and charitable activities serving the Akron and Summit County areas.

The largest new grants went to Musical Arts Association-Cleveland Orchestra, $40,000 for the 2012 Blossom Festival, and $25,000 each to the Akron Zoo (for interactive educational elements at Grizzly Ridge) and to the International Soap Box Derby Inc., to help celebrate the 75th All-American Soap Box Derby championships.

Other recipients of new grants were:

• Akron Community Service Center and Urban League, $5,000 for its Summer Enrichment Day Camp.

• Akron General Development Foundation, $10,000 to Edwin Shaw Rehabilitation Institute for a bariatric lift system.

• Akron Marathon Corp., $5,000 for an intern and $5,000 for 10th anniversary event enhancements.

• Akron Women’s City Club-Coach House Theatre, $10,000 for its Opening Night for Tomorrow Capital Campaign.

• All Star Training Club, $5,000 for summer academic and sports camp scholarships.

• Battered Women’s Shelter, $15,000 for its Crisis Intervention program.

• Big Brothers/Sisters of Summit and Medina Counties, $5,000 for its Big/Little Community Match program.

• Blick Clinic for Developmental Disabilities Inc., $8,000 for a roof over its wheelchair ramp and picnic area.

• Boys and Girls Clubs of the Western Reserve, $10,000 to support its Arlington Club.

• Choices, A Community Social Center Inc., $3,000 for a network/software upgrade.

• Cleveland Modern Dance Association , $5,000 for Summit County outreach.

• Cow Creek Presbyterian Church, $3,000 contribution.

• Conservancy for Cuyahoga Valley National Park, $10,000 for its Peninsula retail/visitor service project.

• Cuyahoga Valley Preservation and Scenic Railway, $10,000 toward its 2012 budget.

• Downtown Akron Partnership, $6,000 for its Downtown Akron beautification program.

• Freedom House for Women Inc., $10,000 for adult support services.

• Friends of Children’s Hospital Harness Race Rally, $2,000 contribution.

• Friends of Historic Glendale Cemetery, $5,000 for fencing.

• Girl Scouts of North East Ohio, $6,500 for its Positive Futures program.

• Hattie Larlham Community Living, $5,000 for display case replacement and purchase of a griddle.

• Humane Society of Greater Akron, $10,000 for its Animal Get Acquainted project.

• Junior Achievement of North Central, Ohio, $4,500 for 2012-13 Summit County school programs.

• Leadership Akron, $4,000 for its XXIX class yearbook.

• Ohio & Erie Canal Corridor Coalition Inc., $10,000 for exterior sign at Richard Howe House.

• Ohio Shakespeare Festival, $5,000 for a permanent stage.

• Prevent Blindness Ohio, $5,000 for its 2012-13 Summit County Vision Care outreach program.

• Progress Through Preservation, $6,000 for a third gift to Preservation House Restoration.

• Rape Crisis Center, $10,000 for its Sexual Assault Victim Advocacy program.

• Rebuilding Together Summit County, $10,000 for its Safe at Home program.

• RED Company real.edge.dance, $3,500 for its second season.

• Stewart’s Caring Place, $10,000 for 2012 programming.

• Summit County Children Services Women’s Auxiliary Board, $4,000 contribution.

• Summit County Historical Society, $15,000 to repair a stone wall.

• Tuesday Musical Club, $6,000 for education and outreach program.

• United Way of Summit County, $10,000 for the Bridges Out of Poverty Summit County collaborative.

• University of Akron Foundation, $10,000 to renovate Emerging Leaders Initiative facilities.

• Weathervane Community Playhouse Inc., $10,000 for its semi-annual newsletter and to support 2011-12 season.

• Western Reserve Historical Society, $10,000 for the Hale Farm & Village “Adopt-a-School Program” for Leggett school in Akron.

• Western Reserve Land Conservancy, $5,000 to help establish a land bank in Summit County.
