Volunteer Opportunities, For the Week of 1-7-13

The United Way of Summit County Volunteer Center recruits and refers volunteers to area non-profit organizations and other organizations required to incorporate volunteer programs for accreditation status. The following organizations need volunteers. ACCESS, Inc.: Volunteers needed weekdays from 10 a.m. – 12 p.m. the 2nd & 3rd week of each month to provide supervision for homeless children of all ages residing at Shelter. Minimum age: 16.

Akron General Health System: Seeking volunteers weekday afternoons to assist with patient transpiration. The Transportation Volunteer duties include greeting and offering patients and guests assistance with directions or with transportation via a wheelchair when needed. Minimum age: 15.

Alliance for Healthy Youth: Seeking high school volunteers to participate in C.A.T.S. peer education public speaking opportunities to advocate for healthy lifestyle choices and to avoid risk behaviors. Minimum age: 16, maximum age: 18.

Boys & Girls Clubs of the Western Reserve: Volunteers needed to help supervise children Monday - Thursday from 1 p.m. – 3 p.m. Volunteers will assist with various activities, assist with tutoring, distribute snack and materials for programs and other tasks as needed. Minimum age: 18.

Catholic Charities Community Services/Summit County: Volunteers needed two Saturdays a month to help with Recreational Respite program activities, such as swimming, arts & crafts, cooking and games. Minimum age: 16, 13 with adult supervision.

Christian Fellowship Basketball League: Volunteers needed Mondays, Tuesdays and Saturdays from 12 p.m. – 4 p.m. to assist with event planning and programming for youth ages 7-18. Minimum age: 16, 12 with adult supervision. Also seeking volunteers to serve on the agency’s Board of Directors. Minimum age: 18.

Church on the Hill: Volunteers needed 12 p.m. – 4 p.m. Wednesdays & Saturdays to assist with general building maintenance (inside/outside), painting, set-up/take-down for events, etc. Minimum age: 16, 12 with adult supervision.

Goodwill Industries of Akron: Volunteers needed to assist in the retail stores, weekday mornings, afternoons, evenings and Saturdays mornings. Minimum age: 14, 12 with adult supervision.

HM Life Opportunity Services: Volunteers needed 5 p.m. – 6:30 p.m. Mondays (Akron location) and 5:30 p.m. – 7 p.m. Wednesdays (Northfield location) to spend time and assist children with crafts, computers and games. Minimum age: 15.

Lake Anna YMCA: Seeking Volunteers to welcome members and guests to our facility and help direct them to the appropriate staff member. Volunteers will also help by leading tours of our building and answering basic questions. Schedule is flexible. Minimum age: 14.

Laurel Lake Retirement Community (Hudson): Volunteers needed a minimum of one hour a week to oversee card games, Bridge and/or Rummy, and to assist residents, as needed. Minimum age: 14.

Pregnancy Care of Summit County: Volunteers wanted weekdays to assist staff in interviewing clients, teaching classes, office/clerical, speaking engagements, etc. Minimum age: 18.

OPEN M: Volunteers needed from 8 a.m. – 11:15 a.m. on the 3rd Friday of each month to assist with “Mountain of Food Giveaway”. Minimum age: 14; younger volunteers accepted with adult supervision.

Rockynol Retirement Community: Volunteer will be responsible for getting list of appointments from beautician, going to resident rooms and then pushing residents' wheelchairs to Beauty Shop. Opportunity is available weekdays. Minimum age: 13.

Salvation Army of Summit County: Volunteers needed to assist with hot meals program 10 a.m. – 1:30 p.m. weekdays. Minimum age: 14.
